Weather-Resistant Flooring for Outdoor Spaces

Weather-Resistant Flooring for Outdoor Spaces

Although many of us may still need dress in layers at the moment, summer is just around the corner. Now is the perfect time to assess outdoor living spaces, to make sure that they are ready for warmer temperatures. There are many options when it comes to upgrading outdoor flooring. Read on for some suggestions and options to spruce up your exterior space!

Covered or Uncovered?

The first consideration when looking at options for flooring is whether your outdoor space is covered with any type of roof or not. A roof will, obviously, block some weather and UV light. If you have no roof, you will need to choose flooring that will withstand being constantly exposed to the elements.

Starting from Scratch?

The next thing to consider is what the current structure is made of, provided you have one. If there is no foundation, then you have many options. Starting from a blank slate to create an outdoor oasis can be fun and a little nerve wracking, so be sure to consult your city or township for rules and a professional for advice.

In some cases, it may be obvious what sort of foundation you will want to use. If you have a relatively flat, open space, a patio made from concrete pavers would work well. If the ground is really sloped, consider a deck that can be built level to accommodate your landscape.

Wood or Concrete?

If you have a wooden deck that needs some love, you have a few options. If the wood is in poor condition, you can swap out boards for new ones. If there are several or many damaged boards, you may want to consider replacing the entire surface of the deck with a composite rather than wood. Composite decking is great because it doesn’t ever rot or need to be maintained with sealant or paint like wood.

If you already have a concrete patio, paver or otherwise, you have the option of putting some flooring over the surface, even if it isn’t in great shape. Wood tiles, made from pieces of wood laid parallel to each other, have a rubber back that attaches to adjacent tiles and allows for drainage. These tiles can take your dumpy patio to something special, and give it the look of an upscale deck.

Available in various sizes and in a myriad of prints and colors, you are sure to find one that will work with your style. Outdoor rugs are easy to clean with a hose and inexpensive to replace should they get worn, or if you just want something different.
